Already Grown

It doesn't mean much to a little kid,
Who's frightened and sad and alone
To be told that his momma and daddy have reasons,
He'll understand when he's grown
How can two people in love say those things,
That shouldn't have ever been said?
And he tries not to cry while the tears from his eye,
Roll down dirty little cheeks into the bed

       And he's already grown
Enough to know the feeling of being alone

And it doesn't take long for a little kid,
To pack up and sneak out the door
Just like his daddy had done to his momma,
So many times before
And he wonders again, how any two friends,
Could hurt one another so hard
And he tries not to cry while the tears from his eye,
Roll down dirty little cheeks into the yard

       And he's already grown
Enough to know the pain of being alone

And it doesn't take long for a little kid,
To eat up his lunch on the run
And shake off his anger to the rhythm of runnin'
And drift off to sleep in the sun
Dreaming of parents who smile at each other,
He's wrapped in their dream loving' arms
So many times now he's run off from home,
Without ever leaving the farm

       And he's already grown
Enough to know the comfort of being alone

Instrumental:

And it doesn't take long for a little kid,
To sleep off his misery and pain
He wakes when the drumming he heard in his dreams,
Turns out to be warm summer rain
And he thinks of his momma, with her face at the window,
And something inside overflows
And without even trying, his feet are a-flying,
Back to the comfort of the love that he knows

       And he's already grown
But not quite enough yet to be on his own
